Approach Shoe Review 2025 (New and Updated Models)

Approach Shoe Review 2025 (New and Updated Models)

Introduction

Approach shoes, by their very nature, have to walk a fine line — sometimes literally — between the many demands of climbers. In a perfect world, they'd climb almost as well as your rock shoes while offering the support of a hiking boot for hauling heavy loads over sketchy talus. They'd be featherlight for fast movement, yet tough enough to withstand years of abuse. Breathable? Absolutely. Waterproof? Of course. Cushioned for endless descents, yet stiff enough to edge and smear with confidence. Comfortable for all-day wear, but snug enough to feel secure when scrambling up exposed rock. The perfect approach shoe is the holy grail of the climbing world—and brands have been chasing it like knights on a very rocky quest.

This review looks at five approach shoe models, each striving to balance those competing needs. No design can do it all, so when choosing a shoe, focus on what you value most, whether it is durability, climbability, weight, or something else, and be ready to compromise on the rest.

Note: At Climb On Equipment, our expert team—climbers, athletes, guides, skiers, and mountain rescuers—carefully selects and independently reviews products to help you make informed decisions. Our reviews are not sponsored, so you'll always get our honest take—whether we love a feature or think it falls short.

Approach Shoe Key Features

  1. Outsole: Use sticky rubber (like Vibram or proprietary climbing rubbers) for better traction on rock. Many have "Climbing Zone" toes, which is a smooth rubber at the front for edging and smearing.
  2. Support & Stability: Built with stiffer midsoles and more lateral support to handle rough, uneven terrain and loads from backpacks.
  3. Upper Material: Often reinforced with protective randing, leather or tough synthetics. Designed to take abuse from sharp rocks and scree.
  4. Fit: Generally a snugger fit with laces all the way to the toes allowing the toe box to be tightened, to enhance climbing performance and scrambling precision.

Approach Shoe Design Trade-Offs

  1. Heel Cushioning: Unlike running shoes, which offer plush padding to absorb impact on smooth trails or pavement, approach shoes keep things firmer for better stability on uneven terrain.
  2. Rounded Heels & Toes: Great for rolling through strides while running, but not ideal for scrambling or edging. Approach shoes trade this design for more precision and grip on the rock.
  3. Toe Room: Running shoes give your toes space to splay for comfort, but that extra wiggle room compromises the control and snug fit needed for climbing performance.
  4. Breathability: Lightweight mesh uppers on running shoes help keep feet cool but wouldn't last long wedged in granite cracks or dragged through talus fields. Approach shoes use tougher, more protective materials.

Detailed Review

La Sportiva TX4 Evo ST (Men's & Women's)

Image of La Sportiva TX4 Evo XT

A rugged reboot of a cult classic, the La Sportiva TX4 Evo ST brings amazing support, traction, and durability to serious rock terrain and approaches. With a resoleable design and more sustainable materials, it's built to perform and last on talus, slabs, and technical approaches. While its stiff feel and extra weight make it less appealing for casual hikers, those who mix scrambling, climbing, and hiking will appreciate the security underfoot.

😌 Performance and Comfort

The TX4 Evo is moderately comfortable but clearly built with rugged performance, not plushness, in mind. A wide toe box accommodates wider feet, though this update runs slightly narrower than the original TX4. The approach shoe is stiff even after dozens of crag days, which isnt great on easy trails but excellent on mixed routes approaches involving trails, talus, scree, slabs and cracks so the trade-off makes sense.

🏋️‍♀️ Weight and Agility

For the Men's version, at 720g, the TX4 Evo is heavier than most modern hiking or running shoes. That extra weight comes from its robust construction and stiff sole—features that favor performance over speed.

🥾 Traction and Stability

This is where the TX4 Evo shines. Its Vibram Megagrip outsole features 3mm lugs, a defined climbing zone at the toe, and grippy heel tread—ideal for everything from dry slabs to loose scree. The shoe's standout feature is the STB Control System; which provides torsional rigidity and support while maintaining underfoot cushioning. This design ensures the shoe remains stable and responsive across uneven terrain, essential for technical approaches, ridgelines, and scrambling. The midsole is ultra-stiff, offering top-tier torsional support and edge control. This shoe is purpose-built for rough ground, and it excels there offering unwavering stability and confidence.

🔍 Build Quality and Durability

The TX4 Evo's burly build is one of its greatest strengths. A thick upper, full rubber rand, and reinforced toe cap offer standout durability and protection. Many users report the upper outlasting the sole, which is why La Sportiva smartly made thi version resoleable. It's built to take abuse—season after season—and keep going. Compared to synthetic hiking shoes the TX4 Evo sits at the top of its class in durability.

📏 Fit and Sizing

The TX4 Evo runs large—so try on a half size down. Great for wider feet, offering a roomy forefoot that doesn't compromise heel security. That said, it's still an approach shoe—firm underfoot and structured. If you're used to soft trail runners, expect a very different experience.

🌿 Sustainability

La Sportiva made notable strides in sustainability with the Evo update. The use of recycled rubber, an emphasis on repairability via resoling, all contribute to reduced environmental impact. Its overall lifespan—especially when resoled—means fewer shoes in landfills and less resource consumption over time.

La Sportiva TX4 Evo Mid GTX (Men's & Women's)

Image of La Sportiva Evo Mid GTX shoes

The La Sportiva TX4 Evo Mid GTX is a mid-height, waterproof approach boot built for technical terrain, offering a compelling mix of support, grip, and lightweight agility. This boot targets alpine climbers and climbers wanting extra support on longer approaches who seek high performance in a durable, protective package.

😌 Performance and Comfort

The TX4 Evo Mid GTX proves capable on everything from granite slabs to muddy trails. Its stiff nubuck leather upper and narrow fit around the midfoot and toe box might not suit everyone, but the leather will soften over time, greatly improving flexibility and comfort. Despite its firm build, the boot offers solid cushioning on long approaches.

🏋️‍♀️ Weight and Agility

With its midweight build, the TX4 Evo Mid GTX strikes an impressive balance. It is light enough to remain nimble on trail while still delivering support for heavy loads and climbing. Compared to competitors like Scarpa's Rapid XT Mid GTX it offers a good blend of technical precision and load-carrying durability.

🥾 Traction and Stability

The TX4 Evo Mid GTX features a Vibram Megagrip outsole with a climbing zone at the forefoot, providing excellent traction on rock and loose terrain. However, as the terrain steepens, you'll want to switch to a proper rock shoe. The Vibram sole pairs with La Sportiva's Impact Brake System—a lug pattern designed to boost grip and reduce impact on descents.

💧🌬️ Waterproofing and Breathability

The Gore-Tex liner, and the leather upper resisted moisture admirably. However, breathability is limited so expect sweety feet on warmer days.

🔍 Build Quality and Durability

True to La Sportiva's reputation, the TX4 Evo Mid GTX is robustly built. Materials and construction are premium, with high-wear areas reinforced. Aesthetically, the women's version pairs dark leather with subtle pink accents and holds up well against stains.

📏 Fit and Sizing

Sized in European measurements, the boots run narrow through the midfoot and toe box. While the leather will break in and adapt over time, this could pose a challenge for those with wide feet. The to-the-toe lacing allows for precise adjustment, including up through the collar, which can be cinched down for a more secure fit.

🌿 Sustainability

Sustainability is a highlight, with recycled materials throughout the boot, a bluesign-certified Gore-Tex liner, and a resolable outsole for extended use. This focus on longevity and low environmental impact adds to the boot's value.

Scarpa Rapid XT (Men's & Women's)

Image of Scarpa Rapid XT shoes

The Scarpa Rapid XT is a versatile hybrid that blurs the line between hiking and approach shoes. It delivers all-day comfort for trail use while still offering enough support, grip, and edging precision for scrambles and moderate rock. Though not as technically capable as more specialized models, its versatility and comfort makes it a compelling single-shoe solution for mountain days that mix trails, crags, and everything in between. Durable, supportive, and thoughtfully designed, it's built for long-term use—at a price that looks increasingly fair over time.

😌 Performance and Comfort

Walking comfort comes first with the Rapid XT, but its performance on rock is surprisingly solid. The broad, rounded toe box, forgiving upper, and lightly padded ankle collar create an immediately comfortable fit—even on long days. While it's not a precision tool for technical climbing, the Rapid XT holds its own on scrambles, low-grade climbs, and rough crag approaches. Unlike stiffer approach shoes that can feel punishing after hours of hiking, this shoe manages to balance comfort with functional rock ability. A slight break-in period softens the upper just enough for a close, natural fit without compromising support.

🏋️‍♀️ Weight and Agility

The Rapid XT is solidly in the midweight category. It's not the lightest shoe in the approach world, and it doesn't match the quick-footed feel of a trail runner—but it's agile enough for mixed terrain. That extra weight comes with the upside of better durability and protection, and unlike most plush trail shoes, the Rapid XT feels stable and planted even on sharp rock or loose ground. You can clip it to a harness on a multi-pitch route and the descent will be comfortable even, though there are lighter options for dedicated weight concious climbers.

🥾 Traction and Stability

The Vibram Megagrip outsole provides dependable grip on dry slabs and rocky scrambles. With a defined climbing zone at the toe, and an ACTIVimpact Technology™ system which uses materials that help absorb the negative impact of ground shoc while going downhill, combined with a supportive TPU midsole, the Rapid XT feels secure whether edging, smearing, or navigating talus descents. It has relatively shallow lugs compared to moutan boot so on mountain days, you may want something with more bite. On rock, however, it punches above its weight and rivals some of the more technical approach shoes.

🔍 Build Quality and Durability

This is a shoe designed to last. The suede leather upper, full protective TPU rand, and reinforced construction give the Rapid XT a robust feel that should hold up to years of rough terrain, making it a longer-term investment in both performance and sustainability. Compared to more delicate trail shoes, the Rapid XT is reassuringly overbuilt.

📏 Fit and Sizing

The Rapid XT has a wide, high-volume fit, especially at the forefoot—ideal for broad feet or those who struggle with narrower climbing shoes. The upper is soft and stretches a bit with use, which helps enhance comfort without sacrificing control. Smooth-running laces extend fairly far down the forefoot for improved adjustment, although they're on the thin side and a little fiddly. If you need precision, you'll get closer to it by lacing tightly.

🌿 Sustainability

Made with “Planet Friendly”, and environment-friendly materials in which materials and processes are specifically chosen for their environmentally friendly characteristics.

Scarpa Rapid XT Mid GTX (Men's & Women's)

Image of Scarpa Rapid XT Mid GTX shoes

The Scarpa Rapid XT Mid GTX is a versatile, mid-height mountain shoe/approach shoe that blends the comfort and durability of the original Rapid XT with added ankle support and waterproof protection. Ideal for wetter hikes, light scrambling, and rocky terrain or carrying a load, it offers a balanced mix of cushioning, stability, and rugged build quality. While not a specialist in technical climbing, it's a reliable all-rounder for those needing a supportive, weatherproof alternative to low-cut approach shoes.

😌 Performance and Comfort

The Rapid XT Mid GTX delivers high levels of underfoot support and day-long comfort. The Gore-Tex lining adds waterproofing without making the boot feel overly hot or clammy, making it a great choice for spring and autumn mountain missions. The supportive midsole and structured ankle cuff make it suitable for rough, uneven trails and scrambling terrain where lateral stability matters. While it's not as nimble as a low-cut shoe on rock, the added cuff protection can be a blessing when bashing through heather, scree, or loose talus or carrying a heavy pack.

🏋️‍♀️ Weight and Agility

The Scarpa Rapid XT Mid is solidly midweight for a waterproof mid-cut boot. It's noticeably heavier than the low version, but the trade-off is greater protection and versatility in variable conditions. On the foot, the boot walks better than its stats suggest. Scarpa has managed to retain some of the trail shoe agility from the original Rapid XT. It won't match a featherweight trail runner for fast-paced missions, but for long, tough days where support matters more than speed, it hits a sweet spot.

🥾 Traction and Stability

Built on a Vibram Megagrip outsole with a defined climbing zone, the Rapid XT Mid GTX performs well across rocky terrain, wet grass, and dry slabs. The boot's stiff TPU midsole enhances edging and foot placement on technical terrain, while the sticky rubber sole gives dependable traction when scrambling. The lug pattern is adequate for muddy or wet trails, though as with most approach-style soles, it prioritizes grip on rock over deep bite in soft ground. The mid-height cuff adds a layer of ankle stability and helps protect against rolls or twists on rough paths.

🔍 Build Quality and Durability

Like the rest of the Rapid XT line, the Mid GTX is well made with durability in mind. The suede leather upper, full protective rand, and reinforced toe box provide solid defense against abrasion and trail abuse. The Gore-Tex lining is well-integrated and effective, without creating pressure points or hot spots. Whether you're bushwhacking, boulder-hopping, or walking in drizzle all day, the materials hold up well and keep your feet dry. While not bombproof in the way some heavier mountain boots are, it's impressively rugged for a shoe this comfortable.

📏 Fit and Sizing

The Rapid XT Mid GTX shares the same wide fit and high-volume design as its low-cut sibling. It suits broader feet well, with enough space in the toe box to accommodate swelling over long days. The padded cuff and tongue wrap comfortably around the ankle, offering a snug fit without rubbing. The lacing extends fairly far forward and up the boot, helping to fine-tune tension across the forefoot and ankle. That said, climbers used to precision-fit shoes might still find it a touch roomy, particularly at the toe.

🌿 Sustainability

While Scarpa doesn't market the Rapid XT Mid GTX as a “green” shoe, the same long-life construction that defines the Rapid XT range applies here too. Made with “Planet Friendly”, and environment-friendly materials in which materials and processes are specifically chosen for their environmentally friendly characteristics.

Scarpa Crux (Men's & Women's)

Image of Scarpa Crux shoes

The Scarpa Crux is a dependable all-around approach shoe that blends grip and durability for climbers, scramblers, and forays into technical-terrain adventurers. With a sticky Vibram Megagrip outsole, cushioned midsole, toe-lacing, and full rubber rand, it handles approaches but where it really shines is in light technical climbs. While not waterproof as a mid or as precise as rock shoe, it offers excellent value and reliable performance for those who need one shoe to do it all from crag to bar to rock ridges to dusty approaches.

😌 Performance and Comfort

The Crux immediately impresses with its comfortable suede upper and EVA midsole — no break-in required. It offers decent breathability, though some insulation remains, making it warmer in hot weather. A well-cushioned footbed and padded collar provide comfort on approaches and descents, while the shoe retains enough stiffness for moderate climbing. That said, it lacks the feedback of minimalist soles and can feel a bit clunky on smooth trails — a familiar trade-off between sensitivity, support, and comfort.

🏋️‍♀️ Weight and Agility

The Crux is nimble, but lighter options are available on the market. Though not as featherlight as trail runners, it balances agility and durability. It is light enough to clip to your harness for the descents.

🥾 Traction and Stability

Equipped with a Vibram Megagrip “Vertical” outsole featuring a climbing zone, the Crux offers excellent traction on both rock and scree terrain. The 3mm lugs and heel brake hold decently in muddier terrain—though they're not as aggressive in soft mud. Precise edging and smearing on slabby surfaces are facilitated by sticky rubber and stiff midsole.

🔍 Build Quality and Durability

Solidly built, the Crux features a durable 1.8mm suede upper, reinforced toe rand, and sturdy stitching Many report minimal wear after extended use, though the softer outsole may wear faster. The shoe is resoleable, improving longevity and value.

📏 Fit and Sizing

We advise to try a half size down; the Crux fits snugly and works well for a range of foot shapes, especially slightly wider feet. The toe-lacing system allows a closer, more precise fit in the forefoot. Basically they climb great and are comfortable enough for an all day shoe.

🌿 Sustainability

While Scarpa doesn't market the Crux as a “green” shoe, the same long-life construction that defines the Rapid XT range applies here too. Made with “Planet Friendly”, and environment-friendly materials in which materials and processes are specifically chosen for their environmentally friendly characteristics.

La Spotiva Boulder X (Men's & Women's)

Image of La Sportiva Boulder X

A burly classic among approach shoes, the La Sportiva Boulder X delivers tank-like durability, all-day stomping, and solid performance for climbers and scramblers tackling rugged terrain. With its sticky outsole, full rubber rand, and approach-specific features, it's built for long, demanding days at the crag and on the rock. While heavy and overbuilt for casual wear, the Boulder X excels when the going gets steep, rocky, and loose.

😌 Performance and Comfort

The Boulder X offers excellent support and stiffness, making it a standout on scrambles and on climbs. A cushioned EVA midsole with a built-in arch insert provides some shock absorption and stability under load but compared to running shoes will not feel as cushioned. While not as agile or breathable as newer La Sportiva models, it remains a highly functional work horse for full-das at the crag lugging a pack around. The interior is well-padded, and the break-in period is minimal, though it can feel warm on hot days.

🏋️‍♀️ Weight and Agility

The Boulder X is on the heavier side for approach shoes. That weight comes with durability and protection, but it can feel sluggish on fast hikes or when trying to run! It's not ideal for those prioritizing speed or minimalism, but if you're carrying a rack and moving over rough terrain, the heft translates to confidence and security.

🥾 Traction and Stability

The Vibram® Idro-Grip outsole with a climbing zone at the toe provides excellent traction on rock, slabs, scree, and dirt. Deep lugs help with off-trail grip, while the stiff platform offers reliable edging for moderate climbing and scrambling. The full-length shank and stable midsole give it the feel of a lightweight boot when needed, making it a solid choice for loose descents and exposed traverses.

🔍 Build Quality and Durability

True to La Sportiva standards, the Boulder X is built to last. The leather upper is reinforced with a protective rubber rand that wraps nearly the entire shoe, guarding against abrasions and rock impacts. The metal eyelets and burly construction inspire long-term confidence, even in alpine environments. It's not designed for easy resoling, but it holds up well over multiple seasons of abuse.

📏 Fit and Sizing

The Boulder X runs true to size for most, with a slightly narrow to medium width that suits lower-volume feet better. The extended lacing system—borrowed from La Sportiva's climbing shoes—allows for fine-tuned fit adjustments from toe to ankle, boosting performance when scrambling or climbing. Those with wide feet may find it snug, especially in the toe box, and trying it on before purchasing is recommended.

🌿 Sustainability

The Boulder X doesn't include any overt sustainability features, and it lacks a resole-friendly design. However, its long lifespan, thanks to its tough build and quality materials, can help reduce waste by replacing shoes less often. Not the most eco-forward model on the market, but undeniably a durable choice that avoids fast-wear-and-throw cycles.
