Backcountry Coffee: 3 Easy Ways to Brew a Great Cup Outdoors

Join Jord and Emily as they explore three different ways to enjoy coffee in the backcountry. Emily, a coffee expert from our friends at Counterpart Coffee, shares her tips and insights along the way. Counterpart is a local roaster known for consistently sourcing high-quality beans from established producers.

Let's talk coffee and learn some tricks to recreate that cozy, home-brewed feel while on the road or in the mountains. This video walks you through different setups to make the perfect cup of joe, no matter where you are.

3 Methods to Make Coffee Outdoors

Method 1 - Instant Coffee

Perfect for the minimalist or fast-moving adventurer. These small pouches go anywhere—just add hot or cold water to rehydrate the coffee solids and you're good to go.

Pros Cons
  • Super fast to make
  • Easy cleanup
  • Lightweight
  • Minimal gear required
  • Lacks the depth and flavour of fresh coffee

Gear Needed

Method 2 - French Press

Great for sharing. Boil water, let it cool slightly, add pre-ground coffee, stir, let it steep for 4 minutes, then press and pour. Don't forget to pack out your grounds.

Pros Cons
  • Rich, full-bodied flavour
  • Compact setup
  • Simple brewing process
  • Brews multiple cups at once
  • Messier cleanup (especially with food prep gear)
  • Slower process
  • Limited by pot size
Gear Needed

Method 3 - The Pour-Over

For the coffee purist. Boil water, grind fresh beans, place the pour-over filter on your cup, create a well in the grounds, and slowly pour water over the top. Watch it drip through, and repeat until your cup is full. (Add a paper filter for a cleaner cup.)

Pros Cons
  • Best flavour and aroma
  • Clean, smooth cup
  • More control over the brew
  • Slower process
  • Requires more gear
Gear Needed
