The No-Edge Family from La Sportiva: Mandala

Mandala from La Sportiva

La Sportiva's No-Edge® Technology is designed to enhance sensitivity, precision, and uniform wear in climbing shoes by eliminating the traditional sharp edge found on the sole. This technology allows for better surface contact with the rock, improved adaptability to footholds, and a more natural feel while climbing.

No-Edge® Technology has been used in several La Sportiva shoes, including the Genius, Futura, Mantra, and Mandala.

The Mandala is designed for modern climbers and is all about precision and performance. It features a super-sticky rubber toe box for effortless toe hooks and a snug, supportive heel for secure heel hooks. With an ultra-thin sole, it keeps your foot close to the rock for unbeatable sensitivity and fast, precise movements on tough climbs. This shoe combines No-Edge® Technology, which helps the toe box mold perfectly to different footholds for better contact and control, with P3® Technology, which ensures the shoe maintains its shape and performance over time.

Mandala History

The Mandala is a renowned bouldering problem located in the Buttermilks near Bishop, California. First ascended by Chris Sharma in February 2000, it climbs a steep, overhanging granite prow and is graded V12.  Prior to Sharma's ascent, the line was considered too difficult and futuristic, with climbers in the 1970s joking that it would only be climbed by "John Gill's grandchildren."

Sharma's success marked a significant milestone in American bouldering, inspiring climbers to pursue more challenging problems. In January 2008, Lisa Rands made the first female ascent of The Mandala, further cementing its status in climbing history. Over time, The Mandala has seen variations, including a sit start graded at V14, first completed by Tony Lamiche in 2002.

Today, The Mandala remains one of the most iconic and sought-after bouldering problems globally, symbolizing a pivotal moment in the evolution of modern bouldering.
