Originally the theme of the 2024 American Alpine Club Benefit Gala, this collection gathers voices that have shaped Yosemite climbing but haven't always gotten their due, opening the conversation to a wider range of perspectives across the sport's history.

Synopsis

This volume is a reminder of who we are as a people and a culture, where we come from, and where we might go. Starting from the 1990s with Lynn Hill's first free ascent of The Nose, these stories trace how climbing broke the gender barrier in bold and spectacular fashion — and make the case that only a wider diversity of voices can carry that history forward. Readers will find personal triumphs, struggles, and transformations that defined Yosemite climbing, alongside a vision of a more inclusive future for the community.

About the Author

John Long was an original member of the legendary Stonemasters, the core group of California climbers credited with igniting the modern adventure sports movement. His achievements include the first one-day ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. He describes himself as "a writer who just happens to get caught up in climbing and adventuring," and has written more than 40 books with nearly three million copies in print. He is a National Book Award recipient, winner of the H. Adams Carter Literary Award from the American Alpine Club, and a Grand Prize winner at the Banff Film and Book Festival. He has two daughters and two grandchildren, and lives in Venice Beach, California.
