Dynamic Climbing Ropes vs. Static Climbing Ropes

Dynamic ropes stretch under load to absorb the impact of a falling climber. Static ropes and semi-static ropes stretch very little, making them very efficient in situations like ascending a rope or hauling a load. Never use static ropes as part of a climbing system where the energy of a falling climber is being absorbed by the rope.

What are the types of dynamic climbing ropes?

A single-rated dynamic rope is designed and tested to be used on its own (non-redundant) as part of a climbing system.

Also known as a Double rope. Halfs or Doubles are used in much the same way a single rope is, but used as a pair. Picture two ropes, each one running through alternative pieces of protection.

Twin ropes or Doubles, are designed to be used in pairs, picture both ropes being clipped to every piece of protection.
