Detailed Description
Panic is perfect for reaching and clipping distant bolts while onsighting, projecting and exploring new routes.
Available in the standard version (30 cm) and XL version (45 cm).
High quality product completely produced in Italy.
Tested piece by piece.
The KONG Panic is fitted with
Tubular webbing with an inner flexible bar that allows it to be held straight or slightly curved
A special connector equipped with an ingenious system that keeps the gate open until it comes into contact with the bolt. At this point the mechanism releases the gate and the connector closes automatically. The mechanism also prevents accidental gate opening when it is under load.
I consider this my equalizing draw given that most bolts are set for average height, while I'm a solid 5" shorter.
It helps significantly when trying to clip from an awkward stance, or when the bolt is placed just before the crux if you're an average height climber, but right after the crux is you're shorter.
The provided carabiner works great. I do think the material used to keep the draw standing upright could be more rigid. The draw will easily bend in the pack if not placed carefully with support around it. Hence the 4 starts.
The first time I saw this device in use was on a multi-pitch bolted route. The first bolt was way out of reach and the potential for breaking an ankle was definitely there. It is quite a niche device but useful for shorter climbers or for routes where you know that there are bolts that are out of reach for whatever reason. I won't take it on every climb but there are a few where I know it is coming along.
